Challenge

LZI provided building enclosure design peer review and construction administration service for the new three-level, 37,000 GSF academic building that features study, hangout, and collaboration spaces for students, faculty offices, clinic and project studios, teaching and research laboratories, and collaboration spaces for the computer science program. LZI completed design peer review of the building enclosure that comprised of exterior wall cladding (metal panels over CI and AWB), horizontal deck waterproofing with pedestal paving finishes, SEJ (seismic expansion joints), fenestration systems (window-wall, curtain wall, and storefronts),  sheet metal flashings, and low-slope roofing. LZI provided construction administration services that included support of the performance mock-up, submittal and shop drawing reviews, responses to RFIs, and progress site visit reviews.  Project challenges included maintain construction during the COVID-19 pandemic, unique building geometry that created complicated transitions for air, water, vapor and thermal control layer continuity, and SEJ integration with existing building.
